Two of my favorite advertisements for one of my favorite fragrances, YSL's Opium. Although often too zealously oversprayed, Opium's luscious spicy fragrance still remains one of my very favorites when used gently and in the right company. Enjoy my review of this very wild and wonderful perfume at

This was one of my all time favorite perfumes Beth! Love the ad.
You know how I adore your perfume blogs! Long live Opium!
Oh, dear. Opium, the scent I love to hate!
Opium ruined for me more movies and concerts than I would care to count. I was nine in '77, and oblivious to the world of adult perfume, which with the advent of Opium, Cinnabar, and Coco began to intrude upon my sensibility, with disastrous effect! To this day, I'm not sure whether I simply dislike the big resiny orientals, or whether being smothered in Opium fumes against my will caused me to hate resiny orientals. (Oddly, though, I really liked Kenzo Jungle L'Elephant - which smells like Opium + Dr. Pepper to me - but not enough to buy a bottle, for heaven's sake! The 2mls I have will last me for the rest of my life.)
People used to apply way too much of the stuff, and perhaps that affected my perception of the smell as well. I thought it rude - and I probably underapply fragrance, myself, as a result, so that you can only smell me if you hug me.
It was fascinating for me to read your Opium experience and to get a taste of how it felt to come of age while wearing it. Thanks so much!
As an aside, it was your review of Magie Noire at PST that encouraged me to find a bottle of the vintage stuff on ebay, and what an amazing perfume that is... freedom and power in a bottle, and utterly feminine to boot. Thanks for that, as well.
